Super Mario 3D Land Review

Posted by Raycxell on November 14, 2011 at 4:55 PM

I have been waiting for this game for such a long time and boy does it please me.

The gameplay is very familiar. You go through various levels, stomp enemies, collect coins and star coins and get to the flagpole at the end. You'll get to some castles, airships, haunted houses , the regular stuff from Mario games that you expect. But every level is very unique and gives a new twist to the gameplay.

Even though the game is a 3D Mario game, it has a lot of 2D elements on it, kinda like in Super Mario Galaxy 2 where you're going along in 3D and then it switches to a 2D view, which is really nice and i really enjoy the addition.

The controls work extremely well, you use the "A" or "B" button to Jump and the "X" or "Y" button to run, use your tail, throw fireballs, etc. Also the Super Jump from Super Mario Bros 2 makes a return when you hold down the "L" button you crouch and it charges up and catapults you upward. You can also do wall jumps and butt stumps like all the Mario games after Super Mario 64 was introduced. So the controls work perfectly fine and had no problems with them.

The plot is that a big storm blows away all the Tanooki leaves from the Tanooki tree from the Mushroom Kingdom Grounds, Bowser notices this and uses this to his advantage and kidnaps the Princess(surprise surprise). He gives them to his minions which gives them the ability of flight and spin attacks, so you'll see minions like Goombas and even Bullet Bills with Tanooki Tails.

Some of the power ups include:
Like i previously said,The Tanooki Suit which let's you flutter in the air for a short time, can let you use a spin attack with the tail and later on let's you turn in to a statue.
The Boomerang suit which let you use boomerangs on enemies
The Fire Flower which throws fire balls
and the Propeller box which lets you fly up high like the propeller suit in New Super Mario Bros Wii.
All in all, they are great suits and let you replay levels in different ways. The power ups also are used as an extra hit, unlike other 3D Mario games, this game uses the traditional life system in which you get 3 hits if you get a power up and if you're hit 3 times you're dead.Which is a fantastic addition since i always preferred this life system to the other one since it adds more challenge.

The Storage System comes back in which if you already have a power up it switches the current one with a new one and puts the old one in a circle in the touch screen.Which is really helpful in situations in the game.

The game is also very long, the levels aren't long or anything but the amount of levels and the replay ability is great, you got to collect star coins to continue to a certain level or even unlock new levels.Plus the end has a surprise for you all.

Music is also very good with it's own great music and remixes of older classics.

Sadly, i haven't gotten to use the Streetpass function but from what i understand is that it involves some item trading or sharing.Which is a nice touch.

Overall, this is another fantastic Mario game, it has fantastic gameplay, perfect controls, great music, great level designs, it brings a lot of stuff from a lot of previous games, it will bring nostalgia to many gamers and if you know your Mario you'll notice references to older games. And it is also the best 3DS game i've played and one of the best games i have ever played.

If you have a Nintendo 3DS right now, you have no excuse to pick this masterpiece up.
